Charlie Sheen’s Date of Birth Explained

Sheen was born on September 3, 1965, as previously stated, and this information is not only biographically correct but also well-documented in databases and the man’s own interviews. His birth name was Carlos Irwin Estévez, and he had two older brothers and two younger ones, making him the third-born and fifth child overall. He later changed his working name to Charlie Sheen, dropping the Spanish ë at the end of Estévez -most likely to differentiate himself from his father and one of his brothers, who continued using the Estévez surname.

It is also worth mentioning that in most cases, the alternative transcription of his birth name is spelled without the ë at the end -Estevez.

Who Is Charlie Sheen’s Father?

Charlie Sheen’s father is none other than the respected Martin Sheen, one of the most revered actors of his time. Martin Sheen, formerly known as Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez, starred in the acclaimed Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now and the celebrated political drama The West Wing as President Josiah Bartlet.
In fact, Martin Sheen began his career under a different name. He officially changed his surname to Sheen in order to appeal to a more receptive audience, since Hollywood producers at the time were not so receptive to exotic-sounding names. His son Charlie went the same route later, dropping the Estévez in his early years as an actor; hence the famous Sheen surname does not appear on any of Charlie’s early filmography entries.
Speaking of Charlie becoming an actor, it is actually interesting to note that his father’s star power did not hurt; in fact, Charlie seemed to have an easy time landing jobs thanks to his famous surname. Charlie has actually talked about how he spent his childhood days on movie sets, fascinated by them and determined to follow in his father’s footsteps. In fact, Charlie (as well as his siblings) seemed to want to become an actor from a very young age.
Charlie Sheen’s mother is Janet Templeton, a former actress, but she kept a relatively low profile compared to Martin.

Are Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez Brothers?

Yes. Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez are brothers, since they are sons of Martin Sheen and Janet Templeton. But Emilio is the one who kept the family name (he starred in The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, and the Mighty Ducks series), while Charlie Sheen changed his surname to Sheen for career reasons; hence, many people consider them not related to each other or consider them distant cousins.

Actually, they grew up together and frequently collaborated with each other, while the latest was in Bobby (2006), which was written by Emilio and directed by him as well.

The Sheen/Estevez family has four children in total:

Emilio Estevez -actor/director, the oldest of four
Ramon Estevez -works in the industry, not in front of cameras.
Charlie Sheen -actor, the thirdborn
Renée Estevez -actress, usually plays supporting roles.

Though it is unusual that the family of four children, all of them, is working in the entertainment industry, nowadays, it seems that every Charlie’s kid is going to follow the family tradition, since his grandkids are also actors.
